CELEBRATING SHOP SMALL WEEK
One of my favorite things about living in Ann Arbor is all the small cafes, shops and restaurants nearby. After growing up in a small town with limited options, I love knowing that there is always a new place to try not far from home. Nick and I highly prefer to go to a unique coffee shop or restaurant versus a big chain when we go out, and we also love the positive impact that comes with that.
Local businesses not only add life and character into a town, but they also provide more job opportunities and ways to give back. More than half of the jobs in the U.S. are created by local businesses and this number continues to grow. When you support a local business, you are also helping to support your city and neighborhood. The taxes that local companies pay are used to fund parks, roads, schools, and even public service workers. Small companies also help provide a better customer experience and personal connection to community.
Although it’s convenient to give your money to huge businesses like Amazon, it is so much more rewarding to support the business owners in your own neighborhood. In celebration of National Shop Small Week, we wanted to share a few of our favorites here in Ann Arbor, MI!
We kicked off the week at our favorite Mexican restaurant to celebrate Cinco de Mayo the way most American’s do…with tacos and margaritas! We love sitting outside here in the warmer months, so Leo can tag along with us. If you are also from Ann Arbor or plan on visiting, I highly recommend the fish tacos!
I love treating myself to a fancy latte or macchiato on occasion and this café is the perfect place to do so! Their shops have lots of seating to get work done or socialize and best of all, they’re dog friendly!
We love taking Leo along to visit and support our local pet stores. They have the friendliest staff and are knowledgeable about their products. If it were up to Leo, we’d take everything in the shop home with us, but I keep him in check with a new toy or bone!
This French inspired café is the perfect spot for a special occasion sweet treat. Their décor is adorable, and their menu is delicious!
I have loved shopping here since I was in high school. I looked forward to the summer festival sidewalk sales all year around. Their clothing is fashionable and high quality. I’m so excited to wear this floral top and white jeans combo this spring! Their brick and mortar boutique is located in downtown Ann Arbor and they also have online shop. Use code LEO10 for 10% off at Verbena now until May 31st, 2019.
As I mentioned above, we love supporting our favorite small businesses and discovering new ones. I hope this blog post inspires you to do the same in your own neighborhood!
